Our Board of Strategic Advisors




Brian A. Hunter
Managing Director

Mr. Hunter is currently the Managing Director of Strategic Capital Allocation Group LLC (“SCA”), a firm he founded on October 1, 2001.

Previously, Mr. Hunter was with Prudential Securities, Morgan Stanley and Smith Barney. Throughout these affiliations, he has built a unique corporate and institutional consulting practice that concentrates on achieving maximum capability for risk-controlled assets.


Mr. Hunter has consulted on over $11 billion in SCA client assets with a goal of enhancing those assets towards improved levels of efficiency. His clients have included a renowned hospital system encompassing endowment, ERISA pension plan and funded depreciation account portfolios, foundations, trusts, and ultra high net worth individuals.

In consultation with the Lehman investment banking division of Shearson Lehman Brothers, Mr. Hunter was instrumental in bringing a regional oil company public and in the design of a public conversion strategy for a regional bank. Also while at Smith Barney, he helped establish reorganization criteria that assisted the $3 billion SB Corporate Trust Company subsidiary to evolve toward a more responsive internal service organization. He also consulted to senior Smith Barney management to reconcile the firm's 401(k) business process with an emerging Corporate Services profitability model.

Prior to his tenure at Smith Barney, Mr. Hunter's experience includes his own consulting firms for derivative portfolio management and international relocation policies and systems on behalf of multinational companies and professional service firms. Clients included McKinsey & Company and Northrop. Mr. Hunter’s initial consulting experience was in competitive strategy assignments while at the Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Company. He focused on market segmentation and merger and acquisition issues for maximizing shareholder value.

Mr. Hunter holds a B.S.E. degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences from Princeton University. At Princeton, Mr. Hunter designed and initiated the Program for Science, Technology and Environment that combined curricula from the Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs and the Engineering School. Mr. Hunter received his M.S. in Urban and Policy Sciences from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he was instrumental in developing and implementing systems solutions to complex public policy problems for New York City and the Nassau/Suffolk County Planning Commissions.

Mr. Hunter serves as a member of The Atlantic Council of the United States. He is also actively involved with alumni affairs for Princeton University

Mr. Hunter is also a CIMA-designated member of the Investment Management Consultants Association. Mr. Hunter serves on the Editorial Board of the IMCA Investments & Wealth Monitor.



Laurent Laskowski, CFA
Director

Mr. Laskowski joined Strategic Capital Allocation Group full-time in 2007 as Senior Associate. Mr. Laskowski primarily focuses on investment strategy, risk management and investment analytics for SCA Group. As a Director, Mr. Laskowski is responsible for the firm’s ongoing research in quantitative analysis and investment strategies. Mr. Laskowski has been instrumental in establishing alternative investment solutions within SCA Group. His responsibilities range from research and back-testing to implementation and portfolio management of systematic strategies.

Mr. Laskowski also provides research targeting derivative strategies offering favorable risk-reward for SCA’s high net worth clients.

Mr. Laskowski received his M.S. in Operations Research from Columbia University in 2007 with graduate research in dynamic pricing and revenue optimization at Columbia Business School. He holds a Diplôme d'Ingénieur in Applied Mathematics from Ecole Centrale de Paris.

Mr.Laskowski is also a CFA charterholder and is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society.




Ryan Spagnolo, CFA
Vice President

Mr. Spagnolo joined Strategic Capital Allocation Group in 2013. His primary role involves contributing to the firm’s portfolio asset allocation and investment strategy as well as alternative investment manager due diligence and client performance reporting. Mr. Spagnolo also assists in the development, implementation and management of alternative investment solutions. His prior experience consists of cross asset class investment analysis and alternative investment business consulting for Bloomberg L.P.


Mr. Spagnolo received his B.S. in Business Management with a concentration in Global Business Strategy from Babson College in 2009 while also attending Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Spagnolo is a CFA charter holder and a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society.



Ashish S. Kulkarni, CFA
Strategic Advisor

Mr. Kulkarni joined Strategic Allocation Group in 3Q'2002.


Mr.Kulkarni received his M.Eng. degree in Information Systems from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with graduate research in Engineering Systems at MIT-Sloan School of Management. Mr.Kulkarni also holds an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University with research in molecular simulations. He completed undergraduate work in Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India.


Mr.Kulkarni is a CFA charterholder, holds the FRM designation and is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society.



Michael Manning
Strategic Advisor

Mr. Manning joined the SCA Board of Advisors as a Strategic Advisor in March 2016.

In addition, Mr. Manning currently serves on the Board of HBCS, Inc. as both Board Member and lead Director for Finance and Audit. HBCS provides revenue cycle services to hospitals and physician practices in the U.S. He also is a Board Member of the Fountain Home Owners Association, Shoal Bay East, Anguilla, BWI.

Mr. Manning was most recently Consultant to Partners Healthcare System, Inc. (PHS) after service as Vice President, Treasury and Chief Investment Officer from 2012 to 2014 and as Deputy Treasurer from 1997 to 2012. PHS is one of the largest charitable diversified health care services providers in the US and the world. Mr. Manning’s oversight of the corporate balance sheet, capital markets, banking and cash management and insurance was in addition to corporate, endowment and Pension investments that his guidance grew from $5 billion to $12 billion over his tenure at PHS. Mr. Manning also was Director:Treasury/Assistant Treasurer/Treasurer at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Massachusetts from 1987 to 1996. At Eastern Airlines from 1968 to 1986, he rose from Financial Systems Analyst to Director Treasurer and Global Cash Management. He began his long and distinguished financial career as a Computer Programmer at John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance.

Mr. Manning was educated at Boston CollegMr. Manning was educated at Boston College where he earned a BS in Business Administration, majoring in Economics and Minoring in Theology and Philosophy. He also attended Duke University in a non-degree Officer Leadership Program through BCBS National Association.



Justin Wender Strategic Advisor

Mr. Wender joined the SCA Board of Advisors as a Strategic Advisor in 2013.  

Mr. Wender co-founded Stella Point Capital in 2012. Previously, Mr. Wender spent more than 17 years at Castle Harlan where he played a significant role in the development of the firm. Mr. Wender ran the firm’s investment process from 2003 to 2010 and was President of the firm from 2006 to 2010. He led the effort of raising two funds at Castle Harlan totaling $2 billion. In addition, Mr. Wender was involved with numerous investments for the firm, serving on the board of directors of 11 portfolio companies over his career. Currently, he serves on the board of directors of First American Payment Systems and Rightpoint. He also serves as a Trustee of Carleton College, the Weitz Funds and as Chair of the International Center for the Disabled. Mr. Wender holds his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his BA from Carleton College.


Dr. Soulaymane Kachani
Strategic Advisor

Dr. Kachani is a co-inventor of SCA's patent-pending asset allocation model and advises SCA on core technical issues involving investment strategy systems development.

Currently, Dr. Kachani is a professor in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at Columbia University.
Prior to joining Columbia, he served as an Associate and a Senior Associate in the Boston office of McKinsey. Dr. Kachani holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research interests include dynamic pricing, transportation network, supply chain and inventory management.

In addition to his academic and research interests, Dr. Kachani continues to consult to McKinsey on issues revolving around pricing and revenue optimization. Dr. Kachani also holds a Master of Science in Operations Research from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Diplôme d'ingénieur in Applied Mathematics from Ecole Centrale de Paris.

Even before assuming an advisory role, Dr. Kachani was instrumental in the development of SCA's asset allocation system while pursuing his Ph.D. at MIT.
